Many system vulnerabilities come from outdated software, which can be exploited by hackers. Appropriately named after the god Heimdallr, from Norse mythology, Heimdal can update your software automatically, to prevent security breaches, infections, data phishing and more. It incorporates advanced traffic scanning technologies, to block threats before they get a chance to affect your computer.

Heimdal comes in free and paid versions and it works on all modern Windows platforms. It can be installed in under a minute, without making any advanced settings. The software doesn't have any special requirements, it doesn't ask for too many resources and it won't conflict with other security applications.

Simply launching Heimdal and letting it run on your computer is all you need to do. In time, it will start monitoring your software and automatically update the ones that need to be updated. Additionally, Heimdal will prevent malware infections, gather various statistics and more.

The software provides a tabbed user interface, which you can bring up through a system tray icon. It displays an overview of your system's security, monitored applications, detected malware and various options. You can set Heimdal to scan for vulnerabilities and to check for updates, for the monitored applications, at specific periods, ranging between thirty minutes and two hours. It is also possible to check for updates manually, with a single click.

Each of the software's modules, for scanning, updating, patching and so on, can be enabled and disabled separately. All you have to do is click their corresponding check boxes, on the Modules tab.

Pros

Heimdal is lightweight and very easy to use. The software is capable of detecting security flaws before they can be exploited. It works quietly in the background, without interfering with anything.

Cons

The malware protection module is not available in the free version. Just as Heimdallr looked out for the first signs of Ragnarok from Himinbjorg, so will Heimdal look out for any threats against your computer.
